Private Individual lessons: guitar and banjo:
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced guitar and banjo students can purchase one hour or one-
half hour private lessons. Allan prepares and delivers lessons based on a student’s individual
learning needs and wishes. The focus can be on traditional folk, country, or bluegrass music as well
as jazz and/or blues.
One-half hour private lesson - $20
One hour private lesson – $30
Three and five day workshops for acoustic guitar and banjo:
One day–three hour banjo workshops:
Beginners and intermediate guitar and banjo players can take part in these workshops, which
feature instructional sessions, jam sessions and discussions of Canadian music history. The
focus will be on traditional folk, country and bluegrass style music. Instructor Allan Kirby has 35
years of music teaching experience and uses an interactive teaching style that is fun and rewarding
for participants. He is a guitar and banjo player who has traveled and recorded with a number of
traditional music groups. Allan has a B.A. in music from Queen’s University and a Masters degree in
Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University. Fees include all printed lesson material. (No
electric amplified instruments please.)
Three-day workshop (minimum of 3 students)- $120 per student See 2008 schedule
Five-day workshop (minimum of 3 students) - $195 per student
Beginning and intermediate banjo players can come together for three hours to share their banjo
interests and receive hands-on instruction. Allan will respond to general inquiries about the banjo;
from instrument purchase repair, and maintenance to chord patterns, scales, and rhythms. There
will be an instructional session focused on a particular aspect of banjo playing, as well as a
controlled jam session where participants experience playing music in a group setting.

and receive hands-on instruction. Allan will respond to general inquiries about guitar playing; from
instrument purchase repair, and maintenance to chord patterns, scales, and rhythms. There will be
an instructional session focused on a particular aspect of guitar playing, as well as a controlled jam
session where participants learn to play music in a group setting.

Allan’s lessons and workshops are informal and relaxed. They are designed to be fun, rewarding
and stress-free. Lesson and workshop locations are Peterborough, Lang Village, Cobourg,
Belleville, Grafton .
